The Unmentionable Symptoms of Arachnoiditis: Bowl, Bladder and Sexual Dysfunction; Pelvic Pain by Dr. Sarah Smith INTRODUCTION: People with arachnoiditis may come to terms with the incessant pain, the muscle spasms, the difficulty in walking etc. etc., but for many, the indignity of loss of control over their bladder or bowel function is a trial which they find difficult to express to other people. Moreover, this sort of loss can lead to increasing isolation, in order to avoid ‘accidents’. Even more private are the difficulties with sexual activity, which can impact so negatively on relationships which are already strained due to the day to day problems of coping with chronic illness. This article is an abridged version, an amalgamation of 3 other articles, and aims to give a broad overview of this type of problem and a brief indication of some of the measures which might be helpful in managing these problems. It should NOT be viewed as a substitute for medical consultation. However difficult it is to face other people to discuss what many view as ‘taboo’ subjects, it is a vital first step towards improving the situation. There ARE ways in which to make life a great deal more bearable and it is a shame if people don’t avail themselves of these facilities. I hope this article will serve as some encouragement to those afflicted with these highly personal difficulties. |
