Pain Lessons: Learning to Heal
Eight
Lessons to help educate and encourage
you in your daily living with chronic pain.

by Ellie O'Steen, LMT

Pain Management
Lesson Two

We've looked at the damage stress does; the damage stimulants do; the importance of exercise and gentle stretching but if stress is soooo bad for our bodies, maybe we'd better check out our stress levels for the past year.

Good idea? Try this & score yourself.....

This is the Holmes-Rabe Scale of Life Events. Thomas H. Homes and R. H Rahe developed this scale to measure the effect that stress has on our mental and physical health. Make note of the units next to the life event that you have dealt with in the past 12- 18 months. When you've read them all, add up the units for your score.

(Note from Denise - I just used my calculator... *grin*)

Holmes/Rahe found that of the people with over 300 life event units, 80% get sick in the near future. Of those who scored 150-299 units, at least 50% were ill in the near future. This gives you a pretty good clue as to how much your stress levels might affect your body's optimum functioning.

Do you have a better picture of where your stress levels have been over the past 12-18 months? Do you have a clearer understanding of what those stressors have been doing to you? Do you recognize the stages of grief that you have been passing through or are in right now? Then, let's move on to the next stage in this PROCESS.....
